Few Americans are aware that the Philippines was an American colony for nearly fifty years before it eventually gained independence in 1946. For hundreds of years prior to that, the Philippines was under Spanish colonial rule. The Filipinos fought to overthrow their Spanish rulers for decades, only to have their independence taken away from them by the U.S., one colonial ruler replaced by another.
